Careful brush strokes
With a fine-tipped painters tool,
Create the perfect face.
Lining the eyes, blushing the cheeks,
Shading lips to brilliant red.
Painting on more than color:
False smiles and confidence,
Lies, cheats, and alterations.
When the painting is done,
She is not the same woman.
Concealing hopes and dreams,
Feigning interests and beliefs,
Pretending, always pretending.
As her mask hides her true face,
The face of a lonely child.
The mask does its job perfectly,
Not a hair out of place,
Not a hint of her real feelings.
And once painted on,
Her mask is impossible to remove.
